The computer needs an identification of the data
- The name is translated into an i-node, or whatever mechanism the underlying storage uses to find the start of the data: but there are other ways to do this.
Human beings say:
- I want to review the last letter I wrote to Uncle Alwyn
- I want to send an email to the Gas people
- Show me the picture of Sally in her wedding outfit
Notes:
If our interface for saying what we wanted to do was better we would have no need for the file name. What we actually want to do is describe the object with which we wish to interact using a number of its properties or attiributes.
