Naming Becomes an Art
Locating a file becomes a matter of second guessing where the creator will have put it
Complex naming standards get developed
- /Websphere6Migration/Phase 1/06 Specialist/Developer/Deployment/Robis/deploydoc.doc
- /Websphere6Migration/Phase 1/02 Management/01 Status Reports/SR2007-09-01.doc
Order is important in file names
- /Documents/Letters/FiltchAndCo/InvitationsToTender/SprocketMk3Project.odt
- /SprocketMk3project/Documents/Letters/InvitationsToTender/FiltchAndCo.odt
Standards are more often abused than followed
Sophisticated search capability has to be built
Notes:
In a large business organisation the number of files is huge.
Documents are created and named by people with different backgrounds, varying levels of logical thinking, and with different agendas.
Being able to find a document becomes 'corporate knowledge' – In practice most organisations have a huge wealth of work which could be re-used if only people knew that it existed or where to find it.
