We Already Do Without
You need never know the file name of an email. It may be part of an mbox file, it may be a separate maildir file, the user doesn't care
- You can order and identify your emails by date, sender, subject...
You don't need to know the file name of a photo: they are mostly meaningless
- You can apply tags to photos and find by tag/category and then select from a set of thumbnails
Notes:
Whilst some sub-systems we are used to using on our computers already hide the file name from us, it is not universal.
Sometimes you know you just want the unread mail. Sometimes you can pick the mail from the ones that you saw in the past day or two. Sometimes you want the last one sent by a given person.
If you use a mail reader with mbox the individual emails don't even have a name. If you use maildir they have names – but you don't ever need to know them.
