Say No to File Names
Tags/Attributes offer multiple names
Some tags can carry data: To, From, Subject...
Date modified, Content type etc can just be tags
Order is not important
To find a file users can narrow the choice and then select from a small range
On creation the system can create some tags and the user can add any further ones
Notes:
There is very much more thinking to do:
In a few cases we have come to rely on the hierarchy of directories to imply certain meaning.
In a single system this looks practical – but how do you move files between systems? How do you control the set of tags and deal with inconsistencies of tag names in each environment?
For a small set of files the computer needs a way of finding them with certainty. Unique attributes or sets of attributes would be required.
Security must be overlaid.
How would we transition to the new type of filesystem?
